ABOUT DESTINATION
Bodrum city centre, in the southwestern corner of the Aegean Sea, is located on the southern shore of the Bodrum peninsula. The city was originally called the Halicarnassus of Caria and was home to the Mausoleum of Mausolos, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The remains of the mausoleum were used by the Knights of St John’s Templar to build St Peter’s Castle. Later, the castle and town became to be known as Petrium, and over time its name was first pronounced Petrum, then Potrum and finally Bodrum. St. Peter’s Castle, which guards the harbour entrance and overlooks the marina, is now home to the Museum of Underwater Archaeology and hosts cultural festivals and events throughout the year.
Bodrum was a quiet town of fishermen and sponge makers, but after the writer Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı was exiled here and so influenced by the town that he took the pseudonym ‘The Fisherman of Halicarnassus’, an influx of writers, poets and artists began, giving Bodrum its beloved bohemian air. Bodrum has a warm Mediterranean climate. Temperatures around 34° (93°F) on average in summer and winter tend to be mild. Average temperatures are around 16°-17° (60°-62°F), making it ideal for exploring many historic sites in the area, Ephesus and the Virgin Mary’s House, Priene, The Temple of Apollo in Miletus and Didyma are a few of them. Or if it’s a more modern setting for you, you can find a wide variety of super luxury yachts, exclusive shops, Yalıkavak Marina with its famous restaurants is only 20 minutes away. Ortakent Yahşi: Ortakent, once known as Müsgebi, which is located among the most beautiful satsuma, lemon and mandarin gardens of Bodrum, has been changed to Ortakent, which means middle city in Turkish, since it is located in the middle of the peninsula between Bodrum and Turgutreis. It still has many orchards producing sweet, pungent tangerines and delicious lemons, for which this region is famous, and is home to one of the best sandy beaches on the peninsula’s coastline, this makes it a major attraction for a day out of the town of Bodrum.
